Nathaniel Baldwin was the son of Elijah Baldwin and was probably the great-grandson of John Baldwin, Sr., a shoemaker from Milford, Connecticut who was granted tracts of land in Newark, New Jersey. Nathaniel Baldwin, his father, and his brother Elias were most likely all Newark shoemakers. It is possible that the three were in business together.
